Where To Find 449th Bomb Group Historical Records

The original operational records of World War II air force units are archived at the USAF Historical Research Agency (HRA), Maxwell AFB, Montgomery, Alabama. The HRA is open to the public and is staffed with professional researchers. (The Historical Research Agency was formerly known as the Historical Research Center.)

The principal 449th Bomb Group holdings are filed by date under the general accession headings of:

[GP-449-SU-OP] and [GP-449-SU-OP-S].

There are many boxes of records within these record groups. Each box of records contains a number of individual folders arranged by date. To conduct an effective search for a particular event it is most efficient to know the exact date of the event.

For each mission flown by the 449th, a planning folder and a mission assessment folder are contained in the Historical Research Agency files. The principal source documents within these folders consists of the following:
