MISSION: Larissa M/Y (Greece)
Date: 22 September 1944
I. Chronology
28 B-24's took off at 0850 to 0907 hours to bomb Larissa M/Y (Greece).
None returned early. 28 dropped 69-1/2 tons 500 lb RDX bombs, .1 &
.01 fusing, on target at 1144 hours from 20,000 to 22,500 feet. Two of
the 28 A/C over target jettisoned ½ ton. 28 returned to base at
1345 hours. None lost. None missing. None at friendly fields. There were
28 effective sorties.
II. Route and Assault
This group rendezvoused over "G" Field at 15,000 feet (2,000
feet high because of weather), thence to Vunoj (4008N - 1942E) to turnpoint
(4009N - 2223E) to a point three miles left of the IP which was Iraklion
(4000N - 2237 E), thence to target, attacking on an axis of 227 degrees
true. The rally was right, thence to Vunoj (4008N - 1942E), making a dog-leg
at 3956N - 2036E to avoid flak, and from Vunoj direct to base.
III. Results.
Good pattern on target, much smoke seen. One large orange colored fire
seen as the group passed over, with large column of black smoke. 4/10 to
5/10 cloud cover over target. Bombing was done visually.
IV. Enemy Resistance
A. Fighters: None.
B. Flak: Over the target this group experienced scant to moderate, inaccurate,
heavy flak of 1 to 3 minutes duration
