a component of the 15th Air Force,
operated from its base near Grottaglie, Italy from January 1944 to
May 1945. The 449th flew 254 combat missions over
Europe and Eastern Asia.

"The
Bomb Blast"
47th Wing Newspaper
From this link you can
view several copies of the 47th Wing newspaper -"The Bomb Blast"
- which were published between July 1944 and May 1945. The 449th Bomb
Group was a component of the 47th Bomb Wing of the 15th Air Force. The
47th Wing was composed of the 98th, 376th, 449th and 450th Bomb Groups.
The "The Bomb Blast" was published weekly and was distributed
among the Bomb Groups. The articles appearing in "The Bomb Blast"
contain information about the war in general and the specific efforts of
the organizations which composed the 47th Wing and the 62nd Service Group.

The 449th Bomb Group
Association (BGA) was formed in 1983 through the efforts of Dick Downey.
The 449th BGA was initially composed of the veterans of the 449th BG .
In 2009 the organization was expanded to the 2nd Generation to include
family members and others interested in preserving the history and the
heritage of the 449th.
