Sketch of the Unit

The Adams Light Guards No. 2 was organized and mustered into the State service on 25 May, 1861 in the town of Natchez, Mississippi. On 21 May 1861, Company D was "ordered into active service" and instructed to "proceed forthwith to Corinth, Mississippi, to the camp of instruction there established." On 21 June, 1861, the Adams Light Guards No. 2 was designated as Company D, 16th Mississippi Infantry. In July 1861, the 16th Mississippi was ordered to Virginia where they became a part of the Army of Northern Virginia.
