Company A, 16th Mississippi Infantry
Sketch of the Unit
The Summit Rifles was organized and mustered into the State service on April 20th, 1861 in the town of Summit, Mississippi. On 21 May 1861, Company A was "ordered into active service" and instructed to "proceed forthwith to Corinth, Mississippi, to the camp of instruction there established." On May 27th 1861, the Summit Rifles was designated as Company A, 16th Mississippi Infantry. In July 1861, the 16th Mississippi was ordered to Virginia where they became a part of the Army of Northern Virginia.
